Today we were making shapes with the babies class. Expressing yourself using your body is a huge part of being a dancer, and so we often work with the students through unstructured things that probably don't look a lot like dancing.
This is what four of them did when they were asked to make a star. They really enjoyed it and giggled a lot. They also made squares, triangles and rectangles.
In truth a dancer's relationship with their body starts at a young age and will continue to grow and develop as their body awareness increases. It is important for them to have a positive relationship with what their body can do to help foster a sense of creativity. It also helps create an awareness of the shapes that their bodies make on stage.
After all the body is a dancer's way of relating to an audience and telling a story.
